We know that the construction industry and road construction are inseparable from sand and gravel, and the market demand is enormous. With the country’s emphasis on environmental protection, traditional extensive sand and gravel enterprises must face transformation and upgrading. The production capacity of various natural sand and gravel materials(such as a river, sea, and mountain sand) has also plummeted. And more and more people use machine-made sand.

Machine-made sand is made by crushing stones with professional sand-making equipment. It is a substitute for natural sand and gravel. The application of machine-made sand will be the general trend.

Natural sand is directly excavated from rivers, beaches, and mountains. Among them, river sand is more commonly used.

The Difference Between Machine-made Sand And Natural Sand

1. Appearance difference

Because the machine-made sand has been screened and the particles are relatively uniform, it will have the characteristics of sharp edges and sharp edges and many needles if it is not rounded.

The river water has scoured the river sand for a long time, and the edges and corners are relatively round.

2. Strong and durable

The firmness of machine-made sand is slightly worse than that of river sand, but it still meets the high-quality product index of GB/T141684293 standard, and there is no problem using it in ordinary concrete.

However, when used in concrete components that are often subjected to friction and impact, in addition to the addition of admixtures, the lime-sand ratio of the concrete, the crushing index of the sand, and the content of stone powder should also be controlled.

3. Stone powder content

The silt content of machine-made sand is greater than that of natural river sand.

The silt content of natural sand is mainly composed of sticky particles with a particle size of less than 0.075mm. If the silt content of natural sand is too large, it will directly affect the strength of concrete.

The powder content of machine-made sand is mainly composed of finely ground rock powder of less than 0.075mm. The powder content of machine-made sand does not exceed 20%. The workability, pumpability, and strength of the mixture have good performance.

4. Bonding and compression resistance

The particle size of machine-made sand is irregular. When cement and other structures are used for bonding, it often has better adhesion than natural sand, is more compressive, and has a longer service life.

5. Composition

Artificial sand is generally artificially selected raw materials. The material is uniform and stable, and the mineral and chemical composition are consistent with the raw materials.

The composition of natural sand is relatively complex, and it will be mixed with impurities such as small pebbles and fine sand.

6. Particle size distribution

General natural sand, one particle size fineness modulus, can have multiple gradations;

We can artificially control the particle size distribution of machine-made sand through the production process according to user requirements.

7. Color difference

Machine-made sand is divided into natural machine-made sand and dyed machine-made sand. Natural machine-made sand, natural color, red, yellow, white, black, green, blue, and other colors.

Advantages and disadvantages of machine-made sand configuration concrete

Advantages

The use of machine-made sand to configure concrete has the following advantages:

(1) Factory production guarantees quality. Factory production can establish a quality monitoring system from a series of processes such as material selection and crushing. The production conditions are good, and the quality of the sand is guaranteed.

(2) The physical and mechanical properties of sand are good. Select hard rock to produce machine-made sand and avoid the soft and weathered rock. At the same time, the amount of mud (block) can be controlled by manual screening. The chemical composition is consistent with the base material and crushed stone and has no negative effect on concrete, so it is suitable for high-strength concrete.

(3) The particle gradation and fineness modulus of machine-made sand can be adjusted. Adjust the fineness modulus and particle gradation of machine-made sand according to the project’s needs, combined with the characteristics of the base material and the concrete requirements.

Complete the adjustment measures by selecting crushing equipment and process flow.

Disadvantages

(1) Natural sand particles are round and smooth. The fineness modulus of medium natural sand is mostly 2.6 and 3.0, and the gradation is good, which is very beneficial to the workability of concrete.

The particles of machine-made sand are sharp, angular, and rough. The fineness modulus is mostly above 3.0. Compared with natural river sand, the particle gradation of machine-made sand is slightly worse, and the grain size of machine-made sand is larger than 2.5 mm and smaller than 0.08 mm. Too many particles will lead to poor workability of concrete and easily cause defects in the appearance quality of concrete.

Changes in the base material of machine-made sand will cause fluctuations in the quality of machine-made sand, which brings certain difficulties to the control of construction quality. However, we can overcome the shortcomings of machine-made sand by choosing appropriate crushing equipment, rationally utilizing the amount of stone powder in the sand, adjusting the sand rate, and selecting appropriate admixtures.

(2) Machine-made sand contains a certain amount of stone powder. Although the particle size of stone powder and mud is less than 0.075 mm, their composition and fineness are also quite different. Most mud particles are smaller than 0.016 mm, while most stone powder particles are between 0.016 -0.075 mm. The mud is adsorbed on the surface of the sand, which hinders the bonding between the sand and the cement. Filling an appropriate amount of stone powder between the cement and fine sand can enhance the workability of the machine-made sand concrete.
